How PRINTlovers 91 is made

For grace received
"Ex voto is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase "ex voto suscepto" and indicates an object donated to God or a saint by a believer who has received a grace. However, ex-votos already existed before the birth of Christianity, which suggests (with some relief) that we are not the only ones who have hoped for a miracle from time to time. Ex-votos are expressions of immense joy and gratitude, the same that we can feel now at the beginning of 2022, which at last brings a glimpse of the end of a dark period. Perhaps we all need to look at things from an optimistic point of view, and above all, always to look ahead. The powerful and ancient symbol of the ex-voto offers a sounding board for universal sentiments but is simultaneously brought up to date through other signs, including putti: figures that appear in art for decorative purposes, reminding us that life can be easy if taken lightly.

Paper
Two papers from Fedrigoni's new MateriaViva collection have been chosen for this issue of PRINTlovers: quality papers and boards with a high content of recycled material, cotton and cellulose which come exclusively from FSC® certified forests. Their sustainable soul perfectly matches even the most sophisticated finishings such as those chosen for this project, demonstrating that even the world of luxury can rely on papers with a natural appearance and content without sacrificing elegance and high performance.

Cover:  Freelife Cento Rough 260 g/m2
Freelife is a collection of high-quality white papers and boards that originated sustainably when nobody was yet talking about recycled papers. It is made of 100% FSC® certified recycled fibres. Beautiful, without half measures. The new Rough finish enriches this historic eco-friendly range par excellence, adding a rougher variant with the same printing qualities. Freelife Cento is part of MateriaViva, Fedrigoni's collection of recycled papers.

Back cover: Materica Quarz 250 g/m2
It is called Materica because you can feel it under your fingertips with its unmistakable cotton fibres (10%), the roughness of wood (40% CMPT cellulose) and recycled fibres (25%) which blend with the purity of virgin cellulose (25%). Its colours are never predictable and recall places in our memory: water, chalk, red earth, slate and, as in this case, quartz. Quarz is the new neutral colour with a delicately pinkish undertone, very much in vogue in graphic and interior design, which allows the print to be warmed up without compromising the colour rendering. Materica s part of MateriaViva, Fedrigoni's collection of recycled papers.

Printing
The back cover has been designed with the idea of looking at 2022, which finally shows the end of a dark period, with joy and gratitude. The print is done by Grafica Metelliana on Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 6-colour UV, which guarantees very high print quality and top performance, and further embellished by two hot effects, which immediately catch the eye. Elements in metallic orange (Luxor 404) alternate with shiny black hot foil details (Luxor 362), giving the design brilliance and vibrancy while at the same time being elegant and accurate. In addition, micro-etched clichés allow for different heights of dry embossing on the surface to highlight the details of the graphic.

Hot colours and clichés
There are two hot foil effects for the Print #91 back cover, and they are immediately visible:
LUXOR® 404, bright metallic orange, very bright and vibrant;
LUXOR® 362, a classic black, always perfect for adding elegance to the design.
Various micro-etched structures throughout the graphics make the design faceted and an embossed print that makes the central body stand out. h+m Italia cliché.
